Het is de meest voorkomende rode druivensoort op het nationale grondgebied en wordt voornamelijk verbouwd in Midden-Italië en vooral in Toscane , waarvan het ongetwijfeld de vaandeldrager is . Sangiovese is feitelijk de enige druif die is toegestaan voor de productie van Brunello di Montalcino , maar kan ook in zuiverheid worden gebruikt in wijnen van andere denominaties zoals Chianti , Chianti Classico , Nobile di Montepulciano, Morellino di Scansano, maar ook in de zo -genaamd " Supertuscans ", die zoveel hebben bijgedragen aan de bekendheid van deze wijnstok in de wereld. Het wordt ook aangetroffen in de regio Romagna en draagt bij aan de productie van wijnen met een unieke en onderscheidende persoonlijkheid.

Het heeft een goede ductiliteit, past zich aan verschillende bodem- en klimaatomstandigheden aan en levert duidelijk territoriale wijnen op, maar komt het beste tot zijn recht als het wordt gekweekt op arme gronden, rijk aan skelet en met een goed percentage kalksteen. De wijn van deze wijnstok heeft een schitterende robijnrode kleur, die in de neus tot uiting komt met karakteristieke aroma's van kers, morellen kers en rijp rood fruit. In de mond is het vol, met dichte en elegante tannines, goede frisheid en aromatische persistentie .
