De oorsprong van dit distillaat wordt al lang betwist tussen Schotland en Ierland. In Schotland wordt Whisky in al zijn vormen uitgedrukt en elk type heeft zijn eigen bijzonderheden. De meeste Schotse whisky's kenmerken zich door de zoetheid van de mout en het droge aroma van de turf . Aan deze min of meer intense rokerige geur wordt toegevoegd die die wordt afgegeven door de passage in het vat.

Elk productiegebied heeft echter invloed op het karakter van de whisky. Er zijn mensen die de voorkeur geven aan degenen die op het eiland Islay zijn geproduceerd, met jodium- en zoute tonen, droog en scherp. Highland Whiskies zijn complexer en voller, omhullend en met een heerlijke rokerige hint. Dit alles geaccentueerd door het feit dat de vaten die gebruikt worden voor het rijpen vaak eerst gebruikt worden voor het rijpen van Sherry. Anderen komen uit het eilandengebied en zijn erg rokerig en turfachtig, met jodium- en zoute tonen. Tenslotte moeten die uit Speyside worden genoemd, die zachter en zoeter zijn.
