At the beginning of the 19th century, Donald and Alexander Johnson, who arrived on Islay to raise cattle, took over a plot of 400 hectares, the name of which, Laphroaig, may derive from the Gaelic "the valley along the bay". From the surplus of barley used for breeding, the two brothers began to distill a whiskey which is highly appreciated on the island thanks to the particularly peated water source. More than 200 years after its birth, which officially took place in 1815, Laphroaig still presents itself today as the richest of the peated products, born from three fundamental elements: water, malt and the art of distillation and aging. The more classic 10-year version belongs to the prestigious range; the "Select", which ages in a special selection of European and American barrels; the "Quarter Cask", whose final aging takes place in small barrels; and the "Lore", the result of a blend of whiskeys aged from 7 to 21 years, recently elected best No Age Statement Scotch of 2019 by the specialized Whiskey Bible guide.
