The industrial production of whisky in Japan started in 1923, with the opening of the Yamazaki distillery, now owned by Suntory, by Shinjiro Torii, who utilized the expertise he gained in Scotland from the first distiller, Masataka Taketsuru. The paths of the two fathers of Japanese whisky diverged in 1934, when Taketsuru founded the Yoichi distillery on the island of Hokkaido, where he believed he had found conditions similar to those in Scotland. He thus gave rise to the legendary Nikka, which in 1969 opened the second distillery, Miyagikyo. Japanese whisky owes its extraordinary quality not only to the purity of the waterways and the country’s climate, which encourages aging, but above all to the meticulous attention to detail, making it almost a handcrafted product. Despite the growing interest in Single Malts, it is predominantly produced as blended, starting from malt and grain sourced from distilleries owned by the same group, with a style clearly focused on smoothness.
