Where is the Rhone Valley located?

The Rhone Valley is located in southeastern France, stretching along the Rhone River from the city of Lyon to the Mediterranean Sea. This wine region is divided into two main areas: the Northern Rhone and the Southern Rhone, each with unique climatic and geological characteristics that influence wine production.

The wines of the Rhone Valley and their main organoleptic characteristics

Some of the most renowned wines in the world are produced in the Rhone Valley, distinguished by their variety and quality.

Northern Rhône: Red wines produced mainly with the Syrah grape predominate here, known for their intensity, complexity and aging capacity. The region's white wines, such as Condrieu, are made from the Viognier grape and are prized for their aromas of tropical fruit and white flowers.

The main AOC denominations are: Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, St. -Joseph, Condrieu and Château-Grillet. Côte-Rôtie and the Hermitage are the most famous.

Southern Rhône: This area is famous for its robust and spicy red wines, often made from a blend of grapes such as Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are among the most celebrated, known for their complex structure, aromas of ripe fruit, Provençal herbs and spices. The white and rosé wines produced here are also highly appreciated for their freshness and versatility.

The most important appellations are: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages, Beaumes-de-Venise and Tavel.
