South African wines
South Africa, whose wines manage to blend European traditions with the taste of the New World, is today among the most interesting wine producing countries. The cultivation of vines in this region dates back to 1659, thanks to the work of the Dutch East India Company, which plants vineyards in the area where Cape Town will subsequently rise. Wine production began to take off around 1680 with the arrival of French, Italian and German migrants, until the extraordinary development at the end of the following century.
The most suitable areas, among which the Stellenbosch region stands out, are located in territories that enjoy an optimal climate where the constant ventilation, given by the presence of the two oceans, gives the wines unique and recognizable characteristics at the first sip. Among the most common varieties we find vines such as Sémillon, Chenin Banc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc for white wines, or even Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, an exclusive variety from South Africa, Shiraz for reds.
