Verdicchio vs Lugana

For a long time, Trebbiano di Lugana, the grape variety on which the Lugana DOC is based, was confused with Verdicchio. However, several genetic studies conducted on the DNA of the grapes have confirmed that they are two distinct grape varieties. In any case, if we want to look for similarities , we find a greater number of similarities between the two, especially when measured against the more evolved versions of the two wines.
In Lugana the general feature is that of a prevalence of floral rather than fruity scents; with age, the same aromas reveal themselves in a more evolved version. The aspect on which Trebbiano di Lugana stands out most is, on the other hand, sapidity.
Verdicchio , on the other hand, plays more on the almost unripe fruit. In the Verdicchio Superiore it veers decisively towards tropical fruity notes. In the mouth, freshness is very pronounced, proving to be the main characteristic. Moreover, it is necessary to consider the difference existing between the two production areas of Verdicchio, that of Matelica and that of Castelli di Jesi. The Matelica area is more mountainous, seasonal and day-night temperature ranges become more important, and this contributes to producing fresher wines, with delicate aromas and lower alcohol content. In contrast, the Castelli di Jesi area, facing the Adriatic, enjoys a climate mitigated by the sea and the vineyards are located at lower altitudes. As a result, the wines produced acquire more vigor and structure .
However, a common thread between Trebbiano di Lugana and Verdicchio may be the bitter and almondy finish often perceived in both wines.
