Due to its particular geographical conformation and geological nature, Italy has an exceptional coastal development compared to the surface of the territory, with the presence of many islands. We are not talking about Sicily and Sardinia, real large regions, but the small archipelagos that dot the coast, from Tuscany to the southernmost tip of our territory. In these small islands scattered in the Mare Nostrum, particular wines are produced and strongly characterized by the specific characteristics of these small rocks. The warm, dry and breezy climate is always mitigated by the sea breezes that contribute to creating a very particular microclimate, with good temperature fluctuations between day and night temperatures. The particular geological nature of the islands, often of volcanic origin or in any case with a very particular soil composition, gives these wines strongly territorial connotations. Furthermore, due to their remote geographic nature and far from easy contamination, the small islands have preserved native vines or particular clones of more widespread varieties, with a unique and typical character. From the Island of Elba to Giglio, from Ponza to Ischia, from the Aeolian Islands to the Egadi, to Pantelleria there are many wines to discover. Here are a couple of examples:
Lazio IGT Ponza Rosso Hay 2015 Ancient Cellars Migliaccio
A red that comes from a blend of piedirosso, Aglianico, red guernaccia and Nero d'Avola, grown on the volcanic soils of Ponza. After fermentation in steel, the wine is aged for 12 months partly in wood and partly in steel. A harmonious and complex wine, which combines a rich fruit with elegant tertiary scents and a characteristic sapid and mineral vein
Salina IGT Rosso 2014 Hauner
The vineyards of Nero d'Avola and nerello Mascalese are grown on the splendid island of Salina. Vinified completely in steel, it is a red that preserves the fruity fragrance and the fresh elegance of the starting grapes.
Ischia DOC Per'e Palummo Tommasone
A pure Piedirosso produced in Ischia in the Sant'Angelo area. Vinified and aged in steel, it exalts the varietal typicality of the grape, its fragrant set of aromas of berries, and cherry. Fresh and slightly tannic, it is an immediate wine of great pleasure.
Ischia Rosso DOC Vineyards of Janno Piro Pietratorcia
An interesting blen of piedirosso (50%) and Guarnaccia (50%) from terraced vineyards exposed to the sea, cultivated on ancient volcanic green tuff terrains. The aging in oak barrels for 8 months gives a wine with an intriguing bouquet of red fruit and spices.
Elba Aleatico Passito DOCG Acquabona
A dessert wine that seduces the palate with its enchanting aromatic notes. The ripe and enveloping fruit, the delicate spiciness and the floral perfumes make it a passito of great charm and elegance
