Concha y Toro
Don Melchor and the Devil's cellar
Concha y Toro, based in the Maipo valley, 20 km from Santiago de Chile , is the largest wine house in South America, the second in the world for hectares of vineyards.
The company was founded in 1883 by the Marquis Don Melchor de Santiago Concha y Toro, a Chilean lawyer and politician who also held the position of Minister of Finance. Passionate about viticulture, Don Melchor decided to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Merlot and Carmenère from Bordeaux in his vineyards and entrust the winemaking to the French winemaker Labouchère.
His wines received so much consensus that innumerable unauthorized "withdrawals" from the servants began to register shortly thereafter. To put an end to the thefts, the Marquis decided to spread the rumor that the cellar was frequented by the devil himself . From that moment Don Melchor's cellar will take the name of " Casillero del Diablo ".
