Although they have the name in common, Chianti and Chianti Classico are born in very different territories for pedoclimatic characteristics. Both derive from the famous blend created by Baron Bettino Ricasoli in his Brolio estate in the second half of the 19th century , however the disciplinary of the two denominations has undergone several changes, while still recognizing a predominant role in Sangiovese which today is allowed to vinify also in purity.

Chianti, whose production area coincides with that of central Tuscany , is divided in turn into the sub-areas Colli Aretini, Colli Fiorentini, Colli Senesi, Colline Pisane, Montalbano, Montespertoli and Rùfina . The latter, which is the small of the seven, is considered the most homogeneous sub -area and one of the most suitable for the cultivation of Sangiovese, thanks to the characteristics of its pre-Montan area.

The Chianti Classico, farmer distinguished by the unmistakable mark of the Gallo Nero, comes instead from the historical production area , between Siena and Florence, also characterized by a mosaic of territories each with its own soil and mesoclimate. Despite the differences, the whole area in recent years has reached one of the highest quality levels of national enology , as evidenced by the impressive number of awards that the labels of this area have received. The Gambero Rosso, in the 2018 edition of the "Vini d'Italia" guide, awarded the prestigious recognition of the Three Glasses to 21 Chianti Classico , including those of Badia a Coltibuono, Borgo Salcetino, Albola Castle, Monsanto Castle, the "Brolio Bettino" by Barone Ricasoli, the "Casavecchia alla Piazza" in Buondonno; the Val delle Corti Reserve and Dievole's "Novecento"; the Gran Selection "Riserva di Fizzano" of Rocca delle Macìe, the Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo di Fontodi.
