The production area of Chianti Classico is the first in the world to have been defined by law, with a proclamation in 1716 by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III. The notice specified, among other things, the boundaries of the areas within which Chianti wines could be produced.

It was then Baron Bettino Ricasoli, between 1834 and 1837, who popularized the composition he considered most suitable for obtaining a pleasant, sparkling and ready-to-drink red wine and which would later become the basis of the official composition of Chianti wine. However, the specification of the denomination has undergone several changes, while still recognizing a predominant role for Sangiovese which today is also allowed to be vinified in purity.

Chianti Classico, characterized by the unmistakable brand of the Black Rooster, comes from the historic production area , between Siena and Florence, characterized by a mosaic of territories, each with its own soil and mesoclimate. It comes from Sangiovese grapes, at least 80%, and from a possible balance of other red grapes authorized in the Tuscany region, such as the native Canaiolo and Colorino vines.

Sangiovese is a grape that is very sensitive to external factors, capable of modifying its aromas depending on the soil in which it is grown. Chianti Classico has a floral bouquet of violets, with aromas of berries . It is a red with good structure, with a nice tannic texture and balanced freshness.

The types included in the denomination are Chianti Classico , Chianti Classico Riserva and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione . Aging is limited to one year for the basic type, 24 months for the reserve and 30 months for the Grand Selection.

Despite the diversity, the entire area in recent years has reached one of the highest qualitative levels of national enology , as evidenced by the impressive number of awards that the labels of this area have received.
