Planeta, Syrah
"Ours is a new way of thinking about traveling to Sicily: Menfi, Vittoria, Noto, Etna and Capo Milazzo. A non-random journey, strongly linked to the diversity of landscapes, winds, the character of men and therefore of theirs. wines. " This is the motto of Diego Planeta, protagonist of the Sicilian wine renaissance, thanks to the collaboration of experts such as Giacomo Tachis, Carlo Corino, Giampaolo Fabris and Attilio Scienza.
Diego played a fundamental role in making his company, founded around 1500 into what it is today: a winery that embodies not just one, but six ways of interpreting and expressing the Sicilian territory; in fact, there are many estates in which wine is produced, each with its own specific research and enhancement project. Through its wines, the company proposes itself as a journey through Sicily , rich in innovative and contemporary contents, but always consistent with a historical interpretation of the territory.
Planeta
The Ulmo estate represents the real beating heart of the company: it is here that the dream began, from those first 50 hectares, in a place that presented itself as a palette of shapes and colors, a real laboratory in which to experiment. From here began the journey in search of native varieties, with maps of ancient books that told stories of ghost wines that led to destinations such as Menfi, Vittoria, then Noto, Etna and finally Capo Milazzo.
At the base there has always been an idea, that of producing every wine in its territory, respecting and enhancing it thanks to an economically sustainable, ecologically careful, socially fair viticulture, in order to truly interpret and tell it in a unique way.
Planeta white wine
Planeta is famous above all for its white wine, with Chardonnay and Cometa which were the first to make Sicily known to the whole world. It is precisely in Menfi, in the historic estate of the Ulmo heart of the company, that the first vineyards were planted, and here some of the most representative wines were born: from Chardonnay , symbol of Planeta production and of the wine rebirth of Sicily, to Cometa , a great white from southern Italy, the result of experimentation on Fiano, from Alastro that best expresses the characteristics of a millenary native vine such as Grecanico , up to La Segreta, a faithful companion of daily good drinking. A range of wines that demonstrates how Sicily is not only Syrah , Frappato and Nero d'Avola , which are also present in the Planeta range.
Why is Planeta Chardonnay wine so famous?
Planeta Chardonnay wine has become the image of the Sicilian change of wine. Born in 1985 from the desire to be able to compete with the world in the production of this noble and widespread vine, today Planeta Chardonnay is an icon for the whole of Sicily, awarded internationally by the best wine guides.
From which grapes is Planeta La Segreta wine made?
This young and fresh wine made mainly from Grecanico grapes, with a touch of Fiano and the addition of international Chardonnay and Viognier grapes. All the grapes are expertly cultivated in Planeta's own vineyards. La Segreta is a versatile companion for everyday drinking and suitable for the most diverse occasions.
Syrah is a red grape variety widespread mainly in the French region of the Rhône Valley. Contrary to what was thought in the past, fabling about the name and its spicy notes, it is not a grape of oriental origin brought to Hermitage by some knights returning from the Crusades. Much more prosaically, the syrah comes from a spontaneous cross between the mondeuse blanc, an ancient variety of Savoy, and the dureza, a grape native to the Ardeche region. Today syrah is the symbolic grape of the wines of the upper Rhône Valley, in particular of the Appellation Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas is also one of the grapes used to produce the wines of the Lower Rhône region: Gigondas Vaqueyras and especially Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is a variety that produces wines of good structure, with floral aromas, of small berries, embellished with the characteristic notes of oriental spices and black pepper. In Italy, it is cultivated with excellent results in Tuscany, both in purity in the Cortona area and in the Bolgheri area as a complementary grape to cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot in the Supertuscan blends. It is also cultivated with interesting results also in Sicily. In the rest of the world it is widespread, mainly in Australia under the name of Shiraz.
