La Guardiense, Italy
La Guardiense is one of the most interesting realities of the Benevento area. It was founded in 1960 by a group of about thirty local winegrowers, to join forces and face together the new scenarios of the world of wine. Today it has about a thousand members who cultivate their properties directly for a total of 1,500 hectares, divided into many small plots. The winery is based in Santa Lucia di Guardia Sanframondi, in the Campania area of Sannio. The vines are grown in the splendid hilly area between the Matese mountains and the Taburno massif, at an altitude between 300 and 350 meters above sea level. The sunny exposures and the cold air currents that descend from the nearby mountains, create a particular microclimate, of a continental type, characterized by considerable thermal excursions between the temperatures of day and night, mitigated by the breath of the sea breezes that rise in the inland. In these lands the vine has lived for millennia and still today it draws with its rows an orderly landscape of wonderful vineyards, perfectly integrated into a green landscape with still wild and uncontaminated nature.
Thanks to a strict internal protocol, the agronomic management takes place with the utmost respect for environmental sustainability, with the use of low-impact treatments and carried out only when absolutely essential. The attention to eco-sustainability also extends to the management of the cellar, which is powered by a company photovoltaic system. The supervision of all production processes is entrusted to the oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, who works in collaboration with the company's oenologist Marco Giulioli. Faithful to the most ancient traditions of the territory, the winery has focused its attention on the main historical vines of the Sannio area. Although there are vineyards of Fiano, Greco, Coda di Volpe and Piedirosso, the company's attention is mainly focused on Falanghina and Aglianico. Falanghina represents the white par excellence of the Sannio Doc, enhanced by the disciplinary from the areas of particular value of Guardia Sanframondi, Sant'Agata dei Goti, Solopaca and Taburno, which create a range of shades of great charm. Guardiense has been able to exploit the ductility of the vine with a range of wines ranging from the Classic Method to the Passito, passing through different versions of still white, from the youngest and most fragrant to those destined for long aging. As for Aglianico, the local tradition has selected the amaro biotype, still used today to produce Aglianico del Taburno, one of the most interesting and rich in history reds from Campania.
