Poggio Le Volpi
The origins of Poggio Le Volpi date back to 1920, when Manlio Mergé began trading bulk wine. The next generation decided to give a new impulse to the family business, founding the Tenuta Poggio Le Volpi, which will see the light in the mid-90s. The company is located in Monte Porzio Catone, southeast of Rome, near the hilly area of Frascati, famous for its viticulture since the times of the ancient Romans. The cool and breezy climate and the precious soils of ancient volcanic origin offer, in fact, the ideal conditions for the cultivation of white berried grapes. Monte Porzio Catone rises on a lateral cone of the Lazio Volcano, which generated the whole area of the Castelli Romani. The soils are very rich in minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, sulfur and magnesium, lava rocks, tuffs and sand, they are very draining soils with good natural fertility. The vineyards are immersed in an uncontaminated environment, next to the Castelli Romani Regional Park, rich in centuries-old chestnut woods.
The project of Tenuta Poggio Le Volpi starts from the desire to rediscover and give value to the most ancient customs of the region, to renew the great tradition of the territory in a modern key and produce wines capable of authentically expressing the typicality of the places. The choice of vines was immediately oriented towards the enhancement of the grapes historically present in the Frascati area: malvasia di candia, malvasia del Lazio, malvasia puntinata, trebbiano, nero buon, cesanese and montepulciano, in addition to the international chardonnay and syrah. The vineyard is the center of the entire production process, with the awareness that only starting from healthy grapes, rich in aromas and genuine, it is possible to make great wines. The estate is cultivated with espalier systems, mainly facing south, which guarantee excellent ripeness during the harvest. The cellar practices are aimed at enhancing the varietal profiles of the grapes with minimal oenological intervention, in order to maximize the precious interaction between vines and volcanic soils. The wines are the result of a rigorous and careful company philosophy, aimed at recovering that level of quality that has made wines of the Frascati area famous since ancient times. The use of native vines and the presence of volcanic soils, which clearly mark the aromatic profile of the wines, allows the creation of important labels, which are true interpreters of the best qualities of a territory of noble traditions.
