Piper-Heidsieck
The story of Piper-Heidsieck begins with the meeting between the German Florens-Louis Heidsieck and Agathe Perthois. Florens was incredibly captivated by this woman who, on her first visit to the Champagne region in 1777, decided to venture into the world of sparkling wine. In 1785 he founded Heidsieck & Cie with the aim of surprising Queen Marie Antoinette who soon, recognizing the particularity of this Champagne, will become his ambassador. Another unexpected meeting of 1815 concerns Christian, Florens' grandson, and Henri-Guillaume Piper, necessary to make Champagne known beyond national borders. With the growth of a great notoriety all over the world and the involvement of prominent personalities, in 1885 the Prestige Cuvée was born and the collaboration with personalities such as Fabergé began. These acquaintances will represent a constant stylistic figure in the company's growth both through the cinema of the 1930s and in the subsequent 1950s. With Humphrey Bogart, Fred Astaire, Ava Gardner, the fame of Piper-Heidsieck still does not know the success that the words of Marilyn Monroe will unleash: 'I go to sleep with a few drops of Chanel N ° 5 and wake up every morning with a glass of Piper-Heidsieck '. From that moment on, the link with the world of entertainment was uninterrupted to the point that from 1993 the participation of Piper-Heidsieck at the Cannes Film Festival was made official. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of Prohibition, Piper-Heidsieck has revived a limited edition Cuvée Brut that reproduces the wording 'Piper Brut' with the same fonts from the beginning of the century. It was a risky journey that Champagne faced at that time: finding a first landing in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a place where no alcohol regulations were in force, the bottles had to face one last journey before reaching other sorting points illegal.
Piper-Heidsieck Champagne
Piper-Heidsieck Champagne is the result of a great intuition that has chosen the methods of meeting and mixing to charm and excel over time. However, the Piper-Heidsieck adventure would not have been possible without the brilliant intuition linked to a territory with enormous potential: continental climate and calcareous soils remain the ideal conditions for growing grapes suitable for this type of winemaking. The classic varieties used in Champagne are the same ones contemplated in the creation of the cuvées: Chardonnay , for momentum and elegance; Meunier , with fruit and pulp; Pinot Noir for structure and power. With vineyards located in the areas of Montagne de Reims and Côte des Bar, the company has long been loyal to many winemakers often linked by a relationship of collaboration that has lasted for at least three generations. The selection of the wines that will make up the cuvée is another significant process that shows consistency with the practice of giving a name to each harvest to identify the climatic and productive singularities that characterize it. In the case of 2004, the harvest defined as 'the marathon runner' defines a strong Champagne and can be kept for many years.
Does Piper-Heidsieck produce sparkling wine?
Piper-Heidsieck produces wines with the Champenoise Method, that is wines characterized by the effervescence produced by a second fermentation in the bottle. What aligns the Classic Method as a category of sparkling wines to the Champenoise Method is precisely the refermentation. It should be remembered that a sparkling wine obtained with the Charmat or Martinotti method will show even more relevant differences.
