Matusalem
Matusalem was born in 1872, during the golden age of Cuba. Rum Matusalem is a timeless distillate, which has expressed elegance and good taste for almost 150 years. In the years of the foundation of Matusalem Cuba was an ideal place to invest, one of the Latin American countries where initiative was rewarded, a perfect habitat to produce a Rum that would have spanned the decades and established itself as a very high quality distillate. The name Matusalem was chosen by the founders Benjamín and Eduardo Camp, together with Evaristo Álvarez to define a timeless Rum, as eternal as Matusalem, the biblical character who lived 969 years. An elegant and free swallow was chosen as the symbol of Matusalem, since several flocks of swallows began to nest near the Matusalem production plant soon after its construction. The Golden Age of Cuba was a pivotal historical phase for Matusalem's expansion and success. The elegant and glamorous Cuba of those years attracted numerous Americans pushed to the island by the strict prohibition of the United States of America. Rum Matusalem represented Cuba, the fashion and spirit of the moment. Since 2015 the production plant has been moved to the Dominican Republic, due to the microclimate similar to that of Santiago de Cuba. Although the production country has changed, Matusalem rum retains an elegant timeless spirit in the eyes of all. Discover the selection on Vino.com.
Matusalem rum
Rum Matusalem is aged with the Solera system, a method typically used to make brandy and sherry. Matusalem was the first company to apply the solera system to the production of rum, influencing the flavor in a unique way. A unique feature of Matusalem is that the "Santiago Master Blender" has always been a member of the family, since 1872. This figure also plays a central role in choosing the level of toasting of the barrels used for aging, which in the case of Matusalem are slightly carbonized, an aspect that gives the distillate unique aromatic and gustatory characteristics. The Solera method, adopted for aging, is defined as dynamic because the barrels used are different from each other and moreover they are arranged on several levels. The first rum produced by Matusalem was the Gran Reserva Solera 15, an iconic award-winning dark rum born in 1872 and still today the symbol of Matusalem for its velvety and intense taste. It is considered the "Cognac of Rum" and is especially appreciated for its woody and complex notes.
