G.H. Mumm
Champagne GH Mumm was born from a noble German family dating back to the 12th century. The Mumms were already wine producers in the eighteenth century in Cologne, in particular with PA Mumm, a company that takes the name of the owner Peter Arnold Mumm. Peter Arnold's sons, Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp, sensing the great potential of the French Champagne region and its wines, decided to open a branch in Reims in 1827 with the coordination of a local winemaker named G. Hauser. From that moment on, the company's motto will be 'only the best', testifying to a tradition of excellence that wants to renew itself from generation to generation while respecting high quality levels in production. With 1852 another key figure, that of Georges Hermann Mumm, takes control of the company that will be called GH Mumm et Cie. From that moment on, Georges Hermann's constant commitment consists in spreading the Mumm brand all over the world the opening of several branches. He also created the 'Cordon Rouge' brand which will be a hallmark of quality for years to come. In fact, in 1876 he decided to embellish the neck of all the bottles of Cuvée Brut with a red silk ribbon in memory of the French honors Ordre Royal et Militaire de Saint Louis and the Grand Cordon de la Légion d'Honneur with which the highest officers. An ideological and promotional choice that will allow him to identify the history of Champagne with the History of France as it will also happen thanks to the intervention of the work of Utrillo and Foujita. To date, the Maison owns about 218 hectares of vineyards: Pinot Noir which occupies most of these with 78% and is located in the Montagne de Reims, while Chardonnay is grown in Cramant and Avize and Pinot Meunier in the Cóte des Blancs and in the Vallée de la Marne. 160 hectares of the Maison are classified as Grands Crus, located in the historic Champagne villages such as Ambonnay, Verzy and Avize, testifying to the great initiative that has been able to enter this region with strength and which for almost two centuries has been producing Champagne of recognized and appreciated quality. . In this regard, even the virtuous practice consisting in buying grapes directly rather than musts already in ancient times, guaranteed Mumm quality control in all production phases.
