Dr. von Bassermann - Jordan
The German winery Dr. Von Basserman is a historic reality in the Palatinate, which has been producing high quality wines for centuries. It is one of the oldest producers in the area, which for over 300 years has handed down the art of viticulture and a precious wealth of knowledge from generation to generation, which has elevated its wines among the best excellences of this important wine region of Germany. The Palatinate Region, or Pfalz in German, represents one of the historical areas of wine and covers a total of about 5,000 hectares, mainly cultivated with riesling. However, there are other varieties, such as gewürztraminer, sauvignon blanc and the reds dornfelder, portugieser, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and regent. The climate is continental, temperate, with very hot summers. In a year there are over 2,000 hours of sunshine, with very low rainfall: ideal conditions for the vine. The Palatinate offers a remarkable variety of soils, which allow to cultivate each variety in the most suitable place: from soils rich in sandstone and skeleton to the most sandy or rich in limestone, schist and basalts. Even today, the Dr. Von Basserman winery has retained a family character and an extraordinary care and passion in creating labels, which perfectly interpret the character of the territory and its customs. Its wines have been drunk on important occasions by many prominent personalities, by Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and Wilhelm Busch, by the Bavarian kings, to the Archbishop of Cologne, to the English Royal Family. The winery labels sealed the signing of the Treaty of Versailles after the Franco-German war in 1871. More recently, German politicians Gerhard Schroeder and Helmuth Kohl have been guests of the estate. The ancient buildings house a wonderful historic cellar, built with brick vaults, which also retains the old vintages until 1811.
Even today, the Dr. Von Basserman labels are an essential point of reference for anyone who wants to know the authentic and typical face of the great wines of the Palatinate, thanks to a park owned vineyards that include some of the most precious parcels in the region, always famous for to give grapes of superior quality. The historic label bearing the date 1811, one of the oldest in Germany, is still used for the "Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan GmbH" range. These are very elegant wines, with a pleasantly fruity character, such as Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. For the other wines of the company, however, the Art Nouveau label designed by Alois Balmer in 1905 is used, showing the Roman Emperor Probus. This collection of wines represents the search to give voice to the peculiar characteristics of each single terroir, in order to enhance its unique and inimitable personality.
