Domaine Leflaive
Domaine Leflaive is a historic brand of the great wines of Burgundy. For centuries he has cultivated vines in some of the most prestigious areas of the Côte d'Or. The origins of the Domaine date back to the late nineteenth century, when Joseph Leflaive married Camille Biétrix du Villars and decided to leave his career as an engineer to devote himself to the family vineyards in Puligny Montrachet. The period was particularly difficult. The European vineyard had had to face the terrible period of phylloxera, the small insect arrived from America, which had devastated the vines by attacking the roots of the plants. The ancient heritage of the vineyards had been almost completely destroyed and all the systems had to be redone. In these years Leflaive sold its wines to the main traders of the region. From 1920 onwards, he patiently began to create new vineyards to give the family estate a future. Thanks to the collaboration of his friend François Virot, Laflaive begins to select the new grafts made from American vines, choosing those most suitable for the composition of the soil and the climate of Burgundy. After a few years, he began to bottle the wine and sell it with his own label to a private clientele, at a time when all the vignerons of Puligny still sold the grapes to the shopkeepers of Mersault and Beaune. The Domaine continued its modernization process and towards the end of the 1970s, the winemaking systems were renovated and the cellar spaces were enlarged. The new project has taken into account sustainability, with the use of thick walls, which guarantee ideal and constant temperatures and humidity, without having to use air conditioning systems.
The estate is divided into numerous plots, which are located in some of the most prestigious and famous areas of Burgundy, in particular in the Grand Crus of: Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet; in the Premier Crus of: Rully Blanc, Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles, Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières, Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes, Puligny-Montrachet Le Clavoillon, Meursault sous le Dos d'Âne; in the Appellation Villages: Auxey-Duresses Blanc, Puligny-Montrachet, Mâcon-Verzé Blanc; and in the Regional Appellations Pouilly-Fuissé and Bourgogne Blanc. The climate of the region, cool, sunny, and the soils mainly composed of calcareous-clayey marl have for centuries proved to be ideal for the cultivation of the two main grapes of Burgundy: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The two noble French vines express themselves on the sweet reliefs of the Côte d'Or with particular elegance and refinement. The labels of the Domaine Leflaive are classic interpretations of the Burgundy territory, faithful to the most ancient traditions and the rigorous style of a great Domaine.
