Colterenzio
Cantina Produttori Colterenzio is one of the main wineries in the province of Bolzano, located on the edge of Cornaiano on the Strada del Vino. This area is historically suited for viticulture, so much so that as early as 1200 its farms and wines were mentioned with the words "vinum schrechpuhlensis". The winery, founded in 1960 by 26 winemakers, now has 300 members, who passionately cultivate the 300 hectares of vineyards giving precious grapes, autumn after autumn. The history of Cantina Colterenzio sees Luis Raifer as the protagonist, a winegrower who in 1979 became the manager of the company and was able to recognize the potential of the winemakers of this wine-growing area and the terroir of South Tyrol. Thus, on his Lafóa estate, he replaced the Schiava vines - from which a popular but mediocre wine was obtained - with those of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc , significantly raising quality standards. Since that moment, preferring quality to quantity has become the basic principle of his work, which he has passed on to all members. Another fundamental objective for the company was added: greater energy self-sufficiency. In fact, since 2009, a photovoltaic system has been introduced that covers most of the company's energy needs. The unique climate of South Tyrol , combined with the attention that the winemakers reserve for the quality and the surrounding environment, give rise to excellent wines, full expression of the terroir of origin.
Colterenzio white wine
Colterenzio white wines come from vineyards spread over a very large area, which includes not only Colterenzio, Cornaiano and Appiano, but also Bolzano and surroundings and Salorno, on the border with Trentino . In such a large area the altitudes vary between 230 and 650 meters and different types of soil alternate: thus 14 grape varieties are obtained, with a prevalence of white wines (which represent 65% compared to 35% of red wines produced by the company). Among the most important white grape varieties grown by the Colterenzio Winery we remember Sauvignon , Chardonnay and Sauvignon . Sauvignon originates from the Bordeaux area, widely spread also in Alto Adige, from which wines with a herbaceous aroma and notes of exotic fruit are obtained. Excellent examples are the Sauvignon Prail Südtirol - Alto Adige DOC and the Lafóa Sauvignon from Cantina Colterenzio, available on Vino.com. Chardonnay, like Sauvignon, is a vine born in France, which has been able to adapt perfectly to the microclimate and to the South Tyrolean soil, so much so that it has been cultivated in these areas for a century now. Cantina Colterenzio produces both an excellent Chardonnay Altkirch with notes of pineapple and mango, and a Chardonnay Lafóa with hints of walnut, mango and melon and a light note of wood. Finally, Gewürztraminer, one of the most emblematic vines of Alto Adige, is also widely cultivated by Cantina Colterenzio: we remember the Gewürztraminer Südtirol - Alto Adige DOC, which stands out for its aroma of yellow roses, lychees and cloves.
What are the characteristics of Sauvignon Colterenzio?
Sauvignon Prail Colterenzio has a bright yellow color with greenish reflections, it looks like a fresh wine, with fruity notes of elderberry. The mineral aftertaste derives from the fact that the grapes used to produce it are grown at an altitude between 400 and 500 meters above sea level, on moraine soils rich in minerals. Fermentation takes place in steel barrels at 18 ° C for about two weeks. Only part of the must ferments in large wooden vats. The assembly and bottling takes place after 6 months of maturation. As a Sauvignon, this wine goes perfectly with fish dishes prepared with aromatic herbs. It is also particularly suitable for dishes based on asparagus, as well as excellent as an aperitif. This fine Sauvignon is one of the wines of the Colterenzio Winery that you can find on Vino.com. Don't miss it!
What are the characteristics of Gewürztraminer Colterenzio?
Gewürztraminer Colterenzio comes from vineyards located at an altitude of about 400 - 460 meters above sea level, located on soils made up of clay and porphyritic gravel. It is a wine with a golden yellow color, which opens on the nose with notes of yellow rose, lychee, cloves and nutmeg. It is a full wine, which with its spicy finish is particularly suitable for aperitifs and spicy appetizers, but also as a pairing with seafood pasta and baked fish. Fermentation takes place in steel after a few hours of low temperature maceration and light pressing. The wine then rests on the fine lees until bottling. You can find the Gewürztraminer Colterenzio on Vino.com.
What are the characteristics of Lafoa Colterenzio?
The Lafóa Colterenzio is a selection of four particularly refined and elegant white and red wines, with an important structure and great aging potential. “The Lafóa idea” started with Luis Raifer, who, in the Eighties, started planting Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon blanc grapes in his Lafóa vineyard. Although with a low yield, the quality of the grapes and wines was very high from the first year of vinification and its reputation has remained unchanged over time. The first of the four Lafóa wines was Cabernet Sauvignon, released with the 1989 vintage. After that, Lafóa Sauvignon blanc and, in recent years, Lafóa Chardonnay and Lafóa Gewürztraminer arrived. Sauvignon Lafòa is obtained from Sauvignon blanc grapes and for this reason it has memories of elderberry, acacia flowers and sage on the nose and hints of wood to the taste. It is a unique wine, which stands out for its tasty acidity and long finish. The soil where the grapes are grown is well exposed and has a sandy and gravelly nature. Following the maceration and pressing of the grapes, the must ferments half in steel and the rest in barriques where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. The maturation on the lees lasts about 8 months after which it passes to a careful bottling.
