Colosi
Colosi is one of the most important names among the producers of Salina, the small island of the Sicilian Aeolian archipelago, which can boast a millenary tradition in the field of viticulture. For over forty years Colosi has been cultivating wonderful vineyards overlooking the sea, in one of the most evocative settings in the whole Mediterranean. During the 1970s, Pietro Colosi gained experience working alongside Hauner, another great Salina winemaker, and created a winery with the desire to make known the excellence of the Salina area. Today the helm of the company is in the hands of the third generation, which continues to work with the same passion and the same love for the land. The estate covers about ten hectares located between Capo Faro and Porri, in a still wild environment, dominated by the shrubs of the spontaneous plants of the Mediterranean scrub. The vines are cultivated in small plots, on terraces supported by dry stone walls, suspended between the sea and the sky. The soils are of ancient volcanic origin, composed of sands and lava stones, very draining and rich in minerals. The conformation of the land forces to a heroic, tiring and expensive viticulture with almost exclusively manual workings in the vineyard. The plants are not irrigated and the vines are forced to go very deep to find water and overcome the periods of summer drought. The climate of Salina is, in fact, hot and dry, always very windy, ideal for growing healthy grapes with rich and intense aromas. Long summers and warm autumns are perfect for drying the grapes in the sun and making extraordinary sweet wines. Keeping faith with the most ancient traditions of the territory, Colosi has chosen to focus on the vines historically present on the island: first of all Malvasia and to follow corinto nero, nerello cappo, nerello mascalese, inzolia and catarratto. Malvasia is the identity vine of Salina. It was probably introduced in the Aeolian archipelago around 600 BC by the Greek colonizers and since then it has always been cultivated, both to make dry white wines and sweet wines from dried grapes. However, the tradition of Malvasia had almost disappeared and only after World War II some tenacious winemakers began to plant the vine again. In recent decades, thanks to a real renaissance of Sicilian wine, even the hectares of vineyards in Salina have increased and an ever-increasing number of producers have been committed to recovering the vine. Colosi is one of the wineries that has focused more on the enhancement of Malvasia and produces different versions, which enhance its best qualities. The Colosi labels are considered among the best on the island for their ability to return the most authentic scents and aromas of this wonderful corner of the Mediterranean.
