Claudio Mariotto
Claudio Mariotto's winery is a reference point for anyone who wants to know the authentic face of the Tortonesi Hills area. The Vho winemaker is one of the leading exponents of the area and has played a fundamental role in the rebirth and enhancement of the region. The Colli Tortonesi area is located in south-eastern Piedmont, towards the border with Liguria. It is a peripheral area with respect to the heart of the Langhe and Monferrato, with unique and particular characteristics. It is a territory of gentle hills, with beautiful sunny and breezy aspects, with a mild climate, which is already affected by the first influences of sea breezes. The soils are characterized by medium-textured soils, consisting of pale clays and limestone, with the presence of skeleton. It is an area particularly suited for white berried grapes and in particular for the native Timorasso vine, a true emblem of the territory. It is an ancient variety that has always been cultivated in the Tortona area, which over the years has risked disappearing in favor of more well-known and productive grapes such as Cortese and Barbera. Timorasso, in fact, does not have an abundant and constant production, it is a difficult grape, which needs the right environment to express itself at high quality levels.
The merit of Claudio Mariotto, together with a small handful of Tortona winemakers, was to believe with tenacity and determination in the qualities of timorasso and to continue to cultivate it without giving in to fashion. The desire to give voice to one's own territory, with the interpreter who could best express its authentic face in the end paid off. Today the Timorasso has conquered a prominent place in the Piedmont of wine and is increasingly appreciated by enthusiasts looking for white wines with a strong personality. It is a grape that gives an intense, complex and structured wine, characterized by a lively expressive freshness. It is one of the Italian whites with a greater aging potential, with aromatic evolutions that bring it closer to the typical hydrocarbon notes of the great Rieslings. Claudio Mariotto's estate includes about thirty hectares of vineyards, mostly dedicated to Timorasso. Its wines are simple and direct expression of quality grapes, without oenological mediations. Just to enhance the nuances of the territory, in addition to a version of Timorasso made with grapes from different vineyards, Mariotto has isolated two parcels with particular characteristics, with which he produces two real crus: Pitasso and Cavallina.
