La Chartreuse is the liqueur created by the friars of the Carthusian order, founded in 1084 by Father Bruno (and one of the oldest orders of Christianity) and with its first historical site in San Pierre de Chartreuse near Grenoble at 1190 meters above sea level at foothills of the Alps. The history of this liqueur dates back to 1605, when Marshal d'Estrées gave the monks of the Charterhouse of Vauvert in Paris a manuscript revealing the formula of a long-life elixir of unknown origin. One hundred years later, thanks to a Carthusian pharmacist, the formula of the Elixir Végétal dell Grande Chartreuse sees its definitive version, except for an adaptation of 1838 with the intention of producing a sweeter and less alcoholic liqueur.
