Château Pape Clément
Château Pape Clément can boast seven centuries of history and has been a Grand Cru Classé de Graves since 1953. The first harvests date back to 1252, when the estate was still called Domaine de la Mothe. The property was bought in 1299 by the Gaillard de Goth, a member of a famous family from Bordeaux. His brother, Bertrand de Goth first became Archbishop of Bordeaux and in 1305 he was appointed Pope with the name of Clement V. The following year Clement V was donated by his dying brother the Domaine, which thus took on the high-sounding name of Château Pape Clément. A great lover of viticulture, the Pope will support the development of viticulture not only in his Domaine of Bordeaux, but also in the Avignon region, particularly in the territories of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise. In 1314, on the death of Clement V, the property became part of the possessions of the Archbishop of Bordeaux until the confiscation of ecclesiastical assets carried out during the French revolution. Over the following decades, one of the leading figures is certainly that of Jean-Baptiste Clerc, who in the mid-19th century bought the property, renovated the vineyards and began construction of the Château, which still distinguishes the Domaine today. Under his direction, the wines of Château Pape Clément are known for their excellent quality and the Domaine becomes one of the most famous in the Pessac area. In 1959, at the time of the classification of the Graves territory, Château Pape Clément was included in the list of 16 estates recognized as Grands Crus Classés de Graves. The Classification of Graves contemplates a single level, without any hierarchical distinction and is not subject to periodic revision. All 16 Crus Classés belong to the AOC Pessac-Léognan: 7 Crus produce only red wine, 3 only white wine and 6 both types. Château Haut-Brion is the only Bordeaux wine present in both the Crus Classés de Graves classification and the 1855 Grands Crus Classés classification. Today Bernard Magrez manages Château Pape Clément in the wake of tradition, producing wines of great elegance and finesse , which represent a point of reference for the whole territory of Pessac. The prestigious Château Pape Clément label is made with a blend of 56% cabernet sauvignon, merlot, 40 and 4% cabernet franc. It is a wine of extraordinary quality, in which the fruity notes are enriched with spicy hints and smoky sensations. Harmonious, deep and with an extraordinary gustatory balance, it represents a legendary label.
