Château Lafite-Rothschild
Château Lafite - Rothschild is a legendary brand in the world of wine, a symbol of excellence and luxury. It is a very ancient Domaine. The first traces of the name Lafite in Pauillac date back to 1234 and there is evidence of the Medieval Lordship on the lands of the Médoc as early as the 14th century. In the 17th century the vineyard began to acquire importance and its wines to gain a certain reputation. In the following century, Bordeaux wines are sold mainly in London and are known as “News French Clarets”, very different from the intense and full-bodied reds that still today are the basis of the fame of the great Bordeaux wines. An important stage in the history of the Domaine Lafite dates back to 1700, with the recognition of the favorite wine at the Court of Versailles, so much so that it is known as "Vin de Roi". Louis XV, Richelieu, Madame Pompadour and later Madame du Berry were among the greatest admirers of Château Lafite. Among the great fans of this great wine, we must also remember Thomas Jefferson, ambassador to France of the Republic of the United States and passionate about viticulture. During a stay in Bordeaux, in 1787, he fell in love with Lafite wine, placing it at the top of the region's production. After the turbulent period of the Revolution, the Domaine was still firmly at the top of the quality of the territory and the classification made in 1855, the year of the Universal Exhibition in Paris, officially consecrated Château Lafite among the Premier Cru Classée. In 1868 Baron James de Rothschild bought the property, adding his surname to the historic brand. Château Lafite - Rothschild extends over a total area of 112 hectares, characterized by precious soils consisting of the classic “terre des graves” soils rich in pebbles with the presence of sands, which insist on a limestone substrate. They are very draining, poor soils, which retain water reserves in depth, allowing the vine to face even hot and dry periods without suffering. The proximity of the Atlantic helps to mitigate the climate and the Gironde estuary acts as a natural thermoregulator, avoiding the danger of spring frosts and allowing the grapes to ripen perfectly until the time of harvest. The vineyard is made up of 70% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. The average age of the vines is around 40 years and the oldest parcel was planted in 1886. The assembly of Château Lafite - Rothschild wine is generally composed of 80-95% cabernet sauvignon, 5-20% merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot in small percentages. A few thousandths were exceptions, for example 1994: 99% cabernet sauvignon and 1% petit verdot and 1961 vintage: 100% cabernet sauvignon.
