Castello di Ama
Ama is a small village, a jewel of medieval origins located on the hills between Gaiole and Radda in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico . In these places, at the end of the 12th century, a local noble family settled, to which the construction of the Castle is attributed, then destroyed at the end of the Middle Ages. The Castello di Ama winery was founded in 1972 by four families of different origins and still today the descendant of one of these families, of Roman origin, leads the company.
The vines of Castello di Ama
Castello di Ama obtains its wines exclusively from its own vineyards. The most famous vineyard is undoubtedly the one in front of the cellar, called "L'Apparita" because at its top the tower of the Palazzo Comunale di Siena appears in the distance. From these grapes, with careful craftsmanship, the wine of the same name is obtained, produced in a very limited number of bottles.
The other important Castello di Ama vineyard, San Lorenzo, is located in the splendid valley in front of the eighteenth-century villas and takes its name from the fifteenth-century church located in the center of the village of Ama. It was acquired by the property in 1972 and today it is the central nucleus of Sangiovese that originates the Gran Selezione Castello di Ama San Lorenzo. To the north of the village of Ama there is the splendid terrace with “dry stone walls” of the La Casuccia vineyard. The property is completed by the beautiful Bellavista and Montebuoni vineyards, located on the hills facing each other.
Castello di Ama red wine
Castello di Ama produces almost exclusively red wine, and is famous above all for L'Apparita, the progenitor of pure Tuscan Merlot wines and which since 1985, the year of its debut, has become an important cult wine. The Great Selection of Chianti Classico Castello di Ama Vigneto Bellavista is also of the highest level, which is among the oldest of the Chianti Classico and has been produced since 1978 with Sangiovese grapes (about 80%) with the complement of Malvasia Nera only in very few bottles. in extraordinary years. The other Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, the San Lorenzo and La Casuccia come from the homonymous vineyards, and complete the range of the numerous Chiantis, also enriched by a rosé, the inevitable Vin Santo del Chianti Classico and a very interesting grappa.
