Tornatore is one of the oldest wineries on Etna. It has been operating since the early 1900s on the northern slope of Etna, where temperatures are milder thanks to the influence of the mountains to the north (the Nebrodi Mountains), but where there are large temperature variations during the day. Today, the Tornatore company owns the largest vineyard in the Etna DOC area, which covers several municipalities and lies between 550 and 700 metres above sea level.
The grapes are selected and processed by hand to better enhance the characteristics of each vineyard. Maturation takes place in oak barrels located in a completely underground environment and isolated with basalt blocks from Mount Etna.
This produces intense and rich wines like the Etna Rosso Contrada Calderara from the Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes. A great wine, it presents itself on the nose with aromas of red and black fruits with hints of spice and cocoa. The palate is structured, with fine tannins and a good finish.
The fine Etna Bianco Contrada Pietrarizzo (92 pts WS and 93 pts Suckling) also comes from vineyards on the northern slope of the Etna volcano. It is made from Carricante and Catarratto grapes that ferment in oak barrels at a controlled temperature of 15-16°C. The wine opens with distinct notes of exotic fruit, grapefruit and white peach. On the palate, it is fresh, spicy and of good complexity.
Equally interesting is the Etna Bianco Contrada Zottorinotto (95 pts Suckling and 96 pts Gardini), made exclusively from Carricante grapes. The must is then vinified in acacia barriques without temperature control, where it matures on the fine lees for about 8 months. On the nose, it unfolds a fine bouquet of broom, ripe yellow peach, honey and vanilla. On the palate, it is complex, pleasantly spicy and long-lasting.
