The success of Vulture wines in Basilicata today depends largely on the tenacity and talent of the Paternoster family, who have believed and invested in the potential of the indigenous grape for over a century. The winery is now in the hands of the third generation, who organically manage the twenty hectares of vineyards divided into small parcels at an altitude of 643 metres. Some of them are among the best cru vineyards, including Rotondo, Macarico, Pian di Carro and Gelosia.
The soils are of volcanic origin with a complex and varied geology and, for this reason, the vineyards are jealously guarded by winegrowers who recognise every nuance of their land and its fruit. Nevertheless, common traits remain, such as the mineral flavour, the very high acidity due to a natural presence of tartaric acid and a noted presence of potassium.
Bariliott, or 'di Barile', the Vulture village that is the birthplace of the Paternoster family, is a fresh version of Aglianico that is young, jovial and immediately approachable for those who want to get to know Vulture and the Paternoster style. Brilliant ruby red in colour with lively reflections, it offers intense hints of red fruits such as cherry and plum on the nose. On the palate, it has prominent tannins and a good freshness and sapidity that make it particularly pleasant and juicy. A wine for the whole meal, it is an excellent accompaniment to rich first courses such as baked lasagne and pasta with meat sauce, grilled meats, medium-aged cheeses, cured meats and sausages.
