Ama is a small medieval village located on the hills between Gaiole and Radda in Chianti in the heart of Chianti Classico. In these places, at the end of the 12th century, the noble family settled who built the Castle, then destroyed at the end of the Middle Ages. The Castello di Ama winery was founded in 1972 by four families of different origins and even today it is the descendant of one of these families who leads the company.
Castello di Ama produces almost exclusively red wine and is famous above all for L'Apparita , the forefather of pure Tuscan Merlots and which has become a cult wine since 1985. Also of the highest quality is the Gran Selezione Chianti Classico Castello di Ama Vigneto Bellavista , among the oldest of the Chianti Classico and produced since 1978 with Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera grapes in small runs and only in extraordinary years. The other Chianti Classico Gran Seleziones, San Lorenzo and La Casuccia complete the range of numerous Chiantis also enriched by a particular Purple Rose , a rosé produced from Sangiovese and Merlot that is definitely worth trying.
