Description
Solaia takes its name from the vineyard of the same name, a plot of land of about 20 hectares facing south-west, on rocky and calcareous soil: the first blend was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, which was then replicated in 1979. In the following vintages a 20% Sangiovese was introduced and some changes were made in the balance between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, up to today's blend. Solaia is only produced in exceptional vintages and was not produced in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1992.
A careful selection of the grapes in the cellar has made it possible to obtain a wine of the highest level. Once the skins and wine have been separated, fermentation begins, carried out in the traditional way and followed by malolactic fermentation which, in barriques, enhances the complexity and elegance of the wine before it can age in French oak barrels for 18 months.
Solaia 2020 has an intense ruby red color and opens to the nose with notes of small red fruits, in particular raspberry and mulberry, which alternate with sweet hints of ripe apricot and blood orange combined with light shades of rose. This is followed by perfectly integrated aromas of coffee bean, chocolate and licorice. The sip is enveloping and harmonious, penetrating and precise, with soft and elegant tannins. The finish is long and persistent, with considerable aging potential. It is the ideal wine for special occasions and can be enjoyed as a meditation wine.
