Chimay's Grande Réserve Barrique
The Belgian Trappist beer Grande Réserve Barrique is produced by the Trappist monks of Scourmont Abbey (near Chimay, a municipality in the province of Hainaut), who have been brewing beer for over 170 years. As an authentic Trappist beer, it is produced under their supervision and the proceeds from its sales are spent almost exclusively on social welfare projects.
How is Grande Réserve Barrique produced?
We start with Chimay Bleue, a top-fermented dark beer that improves over the years and undergoes 3 fermentations. The last fermentation takes place in barrique.
Sight, nose, eye and palate
Dark in colour, this beer is characterized by hints that develop from its permanence in wooden barrels. On the nose there are hints of dried fruit such as raisins and dates, with notes of caramel and toasted hazelnut. The sip is velvety, enriched in structure by the presence of tannins.
What do you pair Grande Réserve Barrique with?
This Trappist beer is to be tried in combination with chocolate and caramel desserts.
