What is a Trappist beer?
Trappist beer, such as La Trappe Trappist and Chimay, is a type of beer produced in Belgium regulated by specific principles. Generally Trappist beer is produced in Trappist abbeys by Trappist monks. The proceeds of the sales of the beer are used by the order for social projects. Trappist beer also has a brand, founded in 1962, which protects its authenticity and makes it recognizable to the customer.
The Trappist monks belong to the Cistercian Order of Strict Observance and take their name from Notre-Dame de la Trappe, where their founder, Armand-Jean le Bouthillier de Rancè, withdrew to the abbey in 1624. Although Belgian Trappist beers are perhaps the most famous, Belgium is not the only producer country. Holland, the USA, Austria, the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic also have monasteries that brew beer within their walls.
Trappist beer has not got defined organoleptic characteristics, however, there are specific styles that characterise it, such as Dubble, Tripel and Quadrupel.
How to pair a craft beer?
Craft beer has had an enormous evolution over the past few years and many medium-small breweries have been founded and have started producing their own beer. As well as producers, lovers of this kind of beer have also increased and so too has their curiosity in matching different styles of beer to dishes that go beyond pizza and burgers.
The freshest and most citrus-flavoured Blanche and Blonde beers can also be served with fish, from fish carpaccio to grilled fish. The most full-bodied and dense, brown and black beers, are often excellent companions for stewed meats or game. Many red and amber beers can be enjoyed with grilled and smoked meats. The most important thing is to experiment and match your favourite beers with the dishes that best enhance them.
